CAA ANNOUNCES SILVER ANNIVERSARY TEAM FOR WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

RICHMOND, Va. (August 20, 2009) – The Colonial Athletic Association has announced its Silver Anniversary team for women’s cross country, which includes 18 former CAA cross country Athletes of the  Year and seven All-America honorees.

As part of its 25th Anniversary celebration in 2009-10, the CAA is recognizing Silver Anniversary teams in 21 championship sports.  The teams are selected by a panel of current and former head coaches in the conference.

William and Mary has been the conference’s most successful women’s cross country program, capturing 16 of the 24 CAA championships, including the last six in a row. The Tribe has competed in the NCAA Women’s Cross Country Championship six times and recorded a 10th-place finish in 1998. James Madison has won five CAA championships, including a streak of four straight from 1999-2002. George Mason claimed CAA titles in 1985, 1986 and 1989.

CAA WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY SILVER ANNIVERSARY TEAM


Amina Amaddah –  George Mason – 1995-97 – Casablanca, Morocco
•    Selected as the CAA women’s cross country Athlete of the Year in 1996 and 1997
•    Won the individual title at the 1996 CAA Cross Country Championship (17:35)
•    Became second athlete to capture back-to-back CAA individual championships in 1997 (17:14)
Meghan Bishop –  William and Mary – 2003-06 – Blue Bell, Pa.
•    Received All-Southeast Region and USTFCCCA All-Academic accolades in 2005
•    Four-time member of the All-CAA team and the CAA Rookie of the Year in 2003
•    Earned All-East honors in 2004 and 2006
Janice Brown –  William and Mary – 1989-92 – Mohnton, Pa.
•    Two-time All-American (1991, 1992) who placed 4th at the 1992 NCAA Cross Country Championship
•    Received Academic All-America honors in 1992
•    CAA cross country Athlete of the Year in 1992 and a four-time All-CAA honoree
Maria-Elena Calle –  VCU – 1996-2000 – Cuenca, Ecuador
•    Finished 8th at the NCAA Cross Country Championship in 1998 and 1999 to earn All-America status
•    Chosen as the CAA women’s cross country Athlete of the Year in 1998 and 1999
•    Won two CAA Cross Country Championship individual titles and placed second twice
Julia Cathcart –  William and Mary – 2003-05 – Starkville, Miss.
•    Earned All-Southeast Region honors in 2004 and 2005 and was All-East in 2004
•    Named CAA Rookie of the Year in 2003 and was a three-time All-CAA honoree
•    Member of three CAA championship teams and 2005 NCAA championship- qualifying squad
Mollie DeFrancesco –  James Madison – 2000-02 – East Greenbush, N.Y.
•    Honored as an All-American in 2002 after placing 30th at NCAA Championship
•    Named CAA cross country Athlete of the Year in 2001 and 2002 after winning individual titles
•    Two-time All-Region honoree after top 10 finishes in NCAA Southeast Regional in 2001 and 2002
Cindy Dunham –  James Madison – 2000-04 – Warren, Pa.
•    Earned All-Southeast Region honors in 2001 and was a two-time All-CAA selection
•    Placed 2nd at the 2001 CAA Cross Country Championship and finished fourth in 2002
•    Captured the ECAC Cross Country Championship in 2001
Bethany Eigel –  James Madison – 1996-99 – Christiansburg, Va.
•    Selected as the CAA cross country Athlete of the Year in 1996
•    Posted three top-five finishes at the CAA Cross Country Championship (1996, 1997, 1999)
•    Two-time All-Southeast Region honoree and two-time NCAA national qualifier (1996, 1997)
Emily Furia –  William and Mary – 1997-2000 – Broomall, Pa.
•    CAA cross country Athlete of the Year in 2000 after winning the conference individual title
•    Selected as an Academic All-American three times (1998, 2000, 2001)
•    Four-time All-CAA honoree who was the league’s Rookie of the Year in 1997
Rachel Hannah –  Georgia State – 2005-07 – Barrie, Ontario, Canada
•    CAA cross country Athlete of the Year in 2007 after claiming the conference individual title
•    Earned All-South Region honors and was Georgia State’s third NCAA national qualifier in 2007
•    Chosen as the2007 CAA women’s cross country Scholar-Athlete of the Year
Heather Hanscom –  James Madison – 1996-99 – Dumfries, Va.
•    Earned All-Southeast Region accolades in 1998 and 1999
•    Posted top-five finishes at the CAA Cross Country Championship in 1998 and 1999
•    Ran a time of 2:31.53 in the 2004 Olympic Marathon Trials
Ali Henderson –  William and Mary – 2000-03 – Pittsburgh, Pa.
•    Honored as an All-American and Academic All-American in 2002 and 2003
•    CAA Cross Country Athlete of the Year in 2003 after winning the conference individual title
•    Two-time All-Southeast Region and three-time All-CAA honoree
Marcie Homan –  William and Mary – 1991-94 – Springfield, Pa.
•    Earned NCAA All-America accolades in 1993 and 1994
•    CAA cross country Athlete of the Year in 1993 and 1994 after winning conference individual titles
•    Member of the All-CAA team during all four seasons with the Tribe
Jackie Kosakowski –  William and Mary – 2001-04 – Sauquoit, N.Y.
•    Received All-CAA honors during all four seasons at William and Mary
•    Earned All-Southeast Region and All-East accolades in 2004
•    Selected as the CAA Rookie of the Year in 2001
Lauretta Miller –  George Mason – 1989-90 – Carson City, Nevada
•    Honored as an NCAA All-American in 1989
•    CAA Cross Country Athlete of the Year in 1989 after claiming the conference individual championship
•     Posted a pair of top-three finishes at the CAA Cross Country Championship (1989, 1990)
Kathy Newberry –  William and Mary – 1996-99 – Burke, Va.
•    Earned All-CAA honors during all four-seasons with the Tribe
•    Member of W&M teams that advanced to the NCAA Championship in 1996 and 1998
•    Received CAA cross country Coach of the Year honors in 2005 and 2008
Cassie O’Neill –  George Mason – 1988-89 – Rye, N.J.
•    Honored as an NCAA All-American in 1988
•    CAA Cross Country Athlete of the Year in 1988 after winning the conference individual title
•    Posted two top-four finishes at the CAA Cross Country Championship (1988, 1989)
Laura Rhoads –  UNC Wilmington – 1994-95 – Lynchburg, Va.
•    Selected as the CAA Cross Country Athlete of the Year in 1995

•    Earned  All-CAA accolades in 1994 after placing 11th at conference championship
Kim Saddic –  George Mason – 1988-91 – West Chester, Pa.
•    Honored as the CAA Cross Country Athlete of the Year in 1991

•    Won the individual title at the 1991 CAA Championship and placed second twice (1989, 1990)
Shannon Saunders –  James Madison – 2002-05 – Forest, Va.
•    CAA Cross Country Athlete of the Year in 2004 and 2005 after winning conference championships
•    Two-time national qualifier to the NCAA Cross Country Championship
•    Earned All-Southeast Region accolades in 2004 and 2005
Jessica Space –  Richmond – 1985-86 – Arlington, Va.
•    Selected as the CAA Cross Country Athlete of the Year in 1986
•    Captured the individual title at the 1986 CAA Cross Country Championship (18:10)
•    Earned All-CAA honors in 1985 after placing eighth at the conference championship
Dena Spickard –  James Madison – 2006-07 – Marion, Va.
•    Chosen as the CAA Cross Country Athlete of the Year in 2006
•    Won the individual title at the 2006 CAA Championship and placed seventh in 2007
•    Earned All-Southeast Region honors and was a NCAA national qualifier in 2006
Cathy Stanmeyer –  William and Mary – 1988-90 – Great Falls, Va.
•    Honored as the CAA Cross Country Athlete of the Year in 1990
•    Posted three straight  top-3 finishes at the CAA Championship and won the event in 1990
•    Member of two CAA championship teams, including the 1990 squad that advanced to the NCAA’s
Andrea Volpe –  George Mason – 1986-87 – Springfield, Va.
•    Selected as the CAA Cross Country Athlete of the Year in 1987
•    Won the individual title at the 1987 CAA Championship (17:48)
•    Earned All-CAA honors in 1986 after placing third at CAA Championship
Jo White –  Richmond – 1981-85 – London, England
•    Won the individual title at the 1985 CAA Cross Country Championship by 56 seconds
•    Was the individual champion at the 1984 ECAC South Championship  (17:51)
•    Three-time All-American in track and field for the Spiders
