JMU'S YOUNG, VCU'S VAUGHN SELECTED IN 2008 WNBA DRAFT
PALM HARBOR, Fla. (April 9, 2008) -- James Madison senior guard/forward Tamera Young was selected by the expansion team Atlanta Dream with the eighth overall pick in the first round of Wednesday's WNBA Draft. VCU senior forward Krystal Vaughn was selected 34th overall in the third round by the Washington Mystics.
Both Young and Vaughn are the first players in their respective school's histories to be selected in the WNBA Draft. It is the first time since 2002 that more than one CAA player was drafted in the WNBA and the first time in CAA history that both have been from two different schools. Old Dominion had four players drafted in 2002.
Young was the leading scorer and rebounder in the CAA and the 2008 CAA Player of the Year. The Associated Press honorable mention All-America honors averaged 20.4 points and 10.4 rebounds a game and scored a CAA and JMU career-record 2,121 points. The 6-2 Young also finished her career ranked second all-time in CAA and JMU history with 1,127 career rebounds.
Young set numerous other school records, including points in a game (38) and season (693), career double-figure scoring games (112), career steals (275) and career starts (125). Her 2007-08 season scoring average (20.4) and career scoring average (16.7) were also JMU records.
Vaughn completed the
2007-08 season averaging 15.6 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Despite making just eight starts in her first two
seasons, Vaughn became the sixth leading scorer in program history with
1,298 career points. She scored 532 points during her
final season with the Rams, the fourth best single-season scoring
output in school history. Vaughn also set a single-season record by
making 140 free throws this season. In addition, she ranks 11th in
career rebounds at VCU with 574.
