CAA CONDUCTS STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING NOV. 4-5 AT TOWSON UNIVERSITY

The 2007 Colonial Athletic Association Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Meeting was held November 4-5 at Towson University. One male and female student-athlete leader from each member institution attended the meeting, along with twelve institutional SAAC advisors, the CAA National SAAC Representative Tyler Kupper, Drexel Athletic Director Dr. Eric Zillmer, CAA Commissioner Thomas Yeager, and members of the CAA staff.

The theme of this year’s CAA SAAC meeting was “Diversity and Leadership.” The event Sunday featured a workshop presented by NCAA Diversity Education facilitators Ashley Armstrong (UCLA) and Cricket Lane(UNC). The Monday portion of the meeting consisted of a breakout session with discussion of hot topics by student-athletes and advisors and an administrative meeting. Topics discussed in the breakout session included: nutrition on the road, pregnancy issues, and text/instant messaging. The administrative meeting included student-athlete input on the CAA championship program, recognition of CAA awardees, student-athlete welfare issues, strengthening the Colonial Academic Alliance, the CAA website, collaborating for community outreach and charitable activities, the Special Assistance Fund, the Student-Athlete Opportunity Fund, and a review of selected proposed NCAA legislation.

At the conclusion of the meeting, student-athlete leaders were challenged to bring back topics and best-practices discussed at the meeting to the campus level and report positive changes on campus back to the conference office so that the results can be shared with all CAA Athletic Directors.
