JMU'S YOUNG HONORED BY AP, JOINS VCU'S VAUGHN AT WNBA PRE-DRAFT CAMP
RICHMOND, Va. (April 2, 2008)? James Madison's Tamera Young has received honorable mention All-America honors from the Associated Press. Young will be joined by VCU’s Krystal Vaughn in Tampa, Fla., as they have been selected to participate at the WNBA Pre-Draft Camp on April 4-5.
Young was the leading scorer and rebounder in the Colonial Athletic Association and the 2008 CAA Player of the Year. She averaged 20.4 points and 10.4 rebounds a game and scored a CAA and JMU career-record 2,121 points. Young also finished her career ranked second all-time in CAA and JMU history with 1,127 career rebounds.
It's the second year in a row that a JMU player has been recognized by the Associated Press. Senior center Meredith Alexis earned AP All-America honorable mention in 2007.
Young, the only CAA player honored by the Associated Press in 2008, established a score of school records. Among those were points in a game (38) and season (693), career double-figure scoring games (112), career steals (275) and career starts (125). Her 2007-08 season scoring average (20.4) and career scoring average (16.7) were also JMU records.
Young and Vaughn have been invited to the WNBA Pre-Draft Camp, which will be held in Tampa, Fla., April 4-5. The two CAA student-athletes are among 40 other players who will attend the camp, which offers WNBA coaches and general managers a chance to evaluate prospects prior to the April 9 WNBA draft.
Vaughn, a senior forward, completed the 2007-08 season averaging 15.6 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Vaughn firmly established her name in VCU lore after four productive seasons with the Rams. Despite making just eight starts in her first two seasons, Vaughn became the sixth leading scorer in program history with 1,298 career points. Despite an ankle injury that limited her in the middle of the past season, the 6-1 forward scored 532 points during her final season with the Rams, the fourth best single-season scoring output in school history. Vaughn also set a single-season record by making 140 free throws this season. In addition, she ranks 11th in career rebounds at VCU with 574.
