Northeastern freshman forward Devin Petta has been named second-team All-America by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America following her outstanding rookie season. She is one of only three freshmen to receive the NSCAA's prestigious All-America title this year, and the only the player from the CAA.
Petta was honored as the CAA's Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year, becoming the first CAA women’s soccer player to receive both awards simultaneously, as well as the first in Northeastern's program history to receive the Player of the Year award.
In 18 games played this season, Petta scored 14 goals and recorded seven assists for a total of 35 points. Of her 14 goals, seven were game-winners. Her 35 points broke the long-standing Northeastern record for points in a season, as well as matched the single-season goal and assist records. Petta's seven game-winning goals stand as the most in a Northeastern season, and only two shy of the program’s career benchmark.
Petta finished the regular season second in the nation is scoring among freshmen, and her points per game average (1.94) was 11th overall among Div. I players. She led the CAA this year in goals, goals per game, points, points per game and game-winning goals.
The CAA had 13 players on the NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic region squad, including six first-team selections. Joining Petta on the first team were James Madison senior defender Teri Maykoski, Hofstra junior midfielder Tiffany Yovino, JMU junior midfielder Teresa Rynier, George Mason junior forward Omolyn Davis and JMU senior forward Corky Julien.
Named to the all-region second team were Georgia State junior goalkeeper Heidi Blankenship and Northeastern freshman defender Sandra Magnusdottir. Earning third-team all-region honors were VCU junior defender Myriam Bouchard, Hofstra senior defender Diane Caldwell, Hofstra senior midfielder Courtney Breen and UNC Wilmington junior midfielder Megan Novak.
