WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Austin da Luz and Anthony Arena both notched goals for Wake Forest as the Demon Deacons held off a latesecond half surge by UNC Wilmington and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Men's College Cup with a 2-1 victory on Sunday at Spry Stadium.

The Demon Deacons (15-3-3) will host ACC rival Duke on Nov. 29. The Seahawks, who had their school-record 14-game unbeaten streak halted, ended the season with a 14-3-5 mark.

After both teams struggled to build scoring chances in the first half, WFU finally broke through in the 35th minute on a curled shot by da Luz. Zack Schilawski, who was credited with an assist on the goal, set up da Luz with a short pass from the left flank after the Seahawks were unable to clear the ball cleanly. Da Luz took one touch and beat UNCW junior goalkeeper Brock Duckworth to the far right post.

WFU nearly doubled its lead with 33:10 remaining in the contest when Ike Opara managed to get a head on the cross, but Duckworth made his fourth save on the night diving to his left. With 24:51 remaining in regulation and the Seahawks trailing, 1-0, senior Kirk Hudgins managed a shot off a deep throw in by Christian Davidson that sailed over the crossbar.

Duckworth’s fifth stop of the game was on a chip shot from Kyle Adams that he punched over the cross bar in the 69th minute to keep it a one goal game.
The Seahawks had several dangerous opportunities in the second half, but the WFU defense held strong on each attack.

Wake Forest’s second goal of the game came in the 76th minute on a corner kick. Corben Bone sent a corner kick to the far right post where Arena knocked it in for his third goal of the season.

Sophomore Shawn Guderian cut UNCW’s deficit in half with his fifth goal of the season coming early in the 86th minute. Junior Daniel Roberts was credited with his fifth assist of the season on the play when flicked a pass into the box for Guderian, who slotted his shot in the middle of the goal.

The Demon Deacons were able to maintain their lead in the waning minutes to advance to the next round. Duckworth finished with seven saves on the game while WFU built a 14-6 advantage in shots.
