W&M'S Schaffer Earns Women's Soccer First Team All-America Honors
RICHMOND, Va. (December 14, 2011) - William & Mary junior forward Mallory Schaffer was selected to the NSCAA women’s soccer All-America first team, and was one of five CAA women’s soccer players who made the NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic Region squad.
Schaffer is the 14th Tribe player to receive All-America honors and the school’s first to make the first team since 1997. She was chosen as the 2011 CAA women’s soccer Player of the Year after leading the conference with 17 goals and 40 points. Schaffer, who was named a second-team All-American by Soccer America, also contributed a league-high six game-winning goals and had six assists. She helped lead W&M to its first CAA championship since 2003 and a berth in the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship. In addition to her performance on the field, Schaffer also was chosen to the Capital One Academic All-America third team.
Schaffer was joined on the NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic Region first team by Tribe teammates Diana Weigel and Cortlyn Bristol. Weigel, a senior back, anchored a W&M defense that gave up only 17 goals and posted a league-best 11 shutouts. The three-time first-team All-CAA selection also contributed offensively with three goals and five assists. Bristol, a junior midfielder, compiled 23 points for the Tribe this season on seven goals and nine assists. The first-team All-CAA choice was tied for second in the league in assists and eighth in points.
Honored on the All-Mid-Atlantic Region third team were VCU junior defender Karol Sanchez and Delaware junior forward Ali Miller. Sanchez, who was named the 2011 CAA Defensive Player of the Year and made the All-CAA first team, anchored a Rams’ backline that surrendered only 15 goals and recorded 10 shutouts. She also scored the game-winning goal in VCU’s 2-0 victory over James Madison. Miller, also a first-team All-CAA honoree, is just the UD player to earn a spot on the all-region squad. She led the Blue Hens and ranked second in the CAA with a school-record tying 14 goals and 30 points this season.
