THREE CAA MEN'S SOCCER PLAYERS NAMED TO HERMANN TROPHY WATCH LIST
Three CAA men's soccer players are among a select group of 39 who have been named to the 2010 Missouri Athletic Club (M.A.C.) Hermann Trophy Watch List, released by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Named to the list were William and Mary senior midfielder
Nat Baako, James Madison senior forward
CJ Sapong and UNC Wilmington senior defender
Indy Smith. The Hermann Trophy, considered the highest individual honor in intercollegiate soccer, was first awarded in 1967.
Baako was recently chosen to the preseason All-America Third-Team by CollegeSoccerNews.com. He has had a fantastic career for the Tribe, earning First-Team All-CAA honors the past two seasons. After his breakout sophomore campaign, there was no letdown for Baako last year, who scored two goals and was tied for second on the team with five assists. Both of Baako’s two goals were game-winners, as the Accra, Ghana, native notched the decisive scores in the Tribe’s victories over Hofstra and Drexel.
Sapong was named to the NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic Region first team in 2009, and he earned All-CAA first-team honors in each of his three playing seasons (2007, 2008, 2009). Last season he led the CAA in points average (1.75) and goals average (0.62) and was second in assist average (0.5). Sapong ranked seventh in the nation in points average, 16th in goals average and 17th in assist average in 2009. He is the first JMU men's player to be represented on the Watch List.
Smith was chosen as a preseason first-team All-American by College Soccer News. He returns for his senior season after earning NSCAA All-America honors last fall and helping the Seahawks to their first CAA tournament title and appearance in the NCAA tournament. As a junior, Smith helped UNCW post the 10th lowest goals against average (0.64) nationally as the Seahawks, who compiled 11 shutouts on the season, fashioned a 14-3-5 record and went 8-0-3 in the league. From his defender position, Smith matched his career-high with four points coming on a career-best two goals. He notched the game-winning margin in a 2-1 win at Towson.
Voting for the MAC Hermann Trophy by college coaches is conducted in late November, when a field of 15 semifinalists is reduced to three finalists. Those three will be invited to the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis on Jan. 7, 2011, where a news conference will be held to announce the winner, followed by a banquet to honor the three finalists.
