BRETT SURRENCY NAMED GSU'S MEN'S SOCCER HEAD COACH
ATLANTA-Brett Surrency, a member of the Georgia State
men's soccer coaching staff since 2005, has been promoted to head coach,
Director of Athletics Cheryl L. Levick announced Monday.
A native of Gainesville, Fla., Surrency served as the
Panthers' top assistant coach for the last four seasons, following one year as
a graduate assistant.
"We are pleased to announce that Brett Surrency will lead
our men's soccer program," said Levick.
"Brett is a very bright young coach who is well-respected
by the student-athletes and skilled in all aspects of coaching, recruiting and
administration. I am pleased to give him the opportunity to run the entire
program."
Before joining the GSU program in 2005, Surrency spent
one season
(2004) as a student assistant coach at his alma mater,
Jacksonville University.
Surrency was a two-time all-conference player at
Jacksonville, where he earned his bachelor's degree in 2004. He added a
master's degree in sports administration from Georgia State in 2007.
Surrency has earned the United States Soccer Federation
National B License and is a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association
of America (NSCAA). He has also worked with the Georgia Soccer Olympic
Development program, coaching the 1995 age group state team.
"I would like to thank Cheryl Levick and [Associate
Director of Athletics] Gail Barksdale for the opportunity to run this program,"
said Surrency. "It's exciting to be at Georgia State
University and part of this athletics program at a time of such dynamic growth.
"We have a good foundation with a nucleus of young
players, and I look forward to working with these young men and helping them
grow as athletes, students and people."
Surrency is married to the former Crystal
Cantrell.
