WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (May 1, 2008) ? Towson junior Hillary Fratzke (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne’s County) was named the 2008 Colonial Athletic Association Women’s Lacrosse Player of the Year by a vote of the league’s eight head coaches. The award was presented at a banquet Thursday night on the eve of the 2008 CAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship, which is being hosted by top-seeded William & Mary.

In addition to Fratzke, the three other major award winners were George Mason junior Maggie Bridges (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI) as the Defensive Player of the Year, William & Mary freshman Grace Golden (Manhasset, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) as Rookie of the Year, and Tribe head coach Christine Halfpenny as Coach of the Year.

Fratzke, a midfielder, is the first Towson player ever to receive CAA Player of the Year honors. The junior was a second-team selection and CAA Rookie of the Year in 2006 and a first-team performer last season. She was named CAA Player of the Week on back-to-back weeks in March. Fratzke led the CAA in several statistical categories, including points (75), ground balls (48), draw controls (73) and caused turnovers (40). She tied for first in the league with 23 assists and was second with 52 goals. The junior has scored a goal in 42 straight games, the longest streak in the nation. She ranks 11th nationally with 4.69 points per game and is 18th in Division I with 3.25 goals per game. Fratzke is also second nationally in draw controls (4.56 pg) and third in caused turnovers (2.5 pg).

Bridges is the first Mason player to earn Defensive Player of the Year honors since Kinsley O’Garrow in 2000. The junior anchored a defense which allowed only 9.75 goals per game, second-best in the league and 24th in the nation. Bridges picked up 36 ground balls for the Patriots, third most on the team. She also had 20 caused turnovers.

Golden became the first Rookie of the Year from William & Mary since 1999 when Meghan Schneider received the honor. The freshman was a solid contributor for the Tribe this season, ranking first or second in several statistical categories. She leads the Tribe with 41 ground balls and is tied for the lead with 18 caused turnovers. The rookie ranks second on the team in points (50), goals (42) and assists (8). Three of Golden’s goals were game-winners, including two in conference games.

Halfpenny led the Tribe to a share of the CAA regular season title with a 5-2 record. Her team posted a 9-8 overall record, while logging six more wins than last season. In her second season at W&M, Halfpenny took the Tribe from a last place finish in 2007 in the CAA standings to hosting the championship as the #1 seed in 2008.

In addition to the four major awards handed out Thursday, the CAA also announced the 2008 all-conference first, second and rookie teams.
